Lameness
Investigations
Lameness is a commonly encountered issue in the horse world, and can cause both owner and horse a lot of stress and worry.
It can present as an obvious ‘head bob’ or limp, or can be more subtle such as a horse not being able to maintain a canter on the correct leg. At South Moor Equine Vets we perform complex lameness work-ups, including nerve blocks and joint blocks, to better isolate the source of your horses’ pain. We also have fully mobile high quality digital x-ray and ultrasound, enabling us to provide a comprehensive diagnostic service, including more complex imaging such as contrast radiographs.
If you suspect your horse is lame, it’s best to call our team at South Moor Equine sooner rather than later so we can start getting to the bottom of the issue.

Pre-purchase
Exams
A Pre-purcahse Examination (PPE) – commonly known as a vetting – is a standardised examination of the horse by a veterinary surgeon in order to form an opinion of the suitability of that horse for the purchaser’s requirements on the day of examination.
There are 2 types of PPE: a 2 stage (limited PPE) and a 5 stage (full PPE). A 2 stage PPE is limited as it does not include examination of the horse during and after exercise, therefore some conditions which could have an impact on ridden work (e.g. a wind noise during exercise or lameness after exercise) may not be picked up on.
If you are purchasing a horse and considering insuring them, we recommend checking with the insurance company in advance what they require from the PPE e.g. 5 stages, X-rays etc.
For more detailed information about PPEs check out our PPE factsheet or give us a ring.

Routine Health Care
Our team of experienced vets are able to provide you and your horse with all aspects of routine health care to prevent problems before they happen.
With South Moor Vets all aspects of your horse’s routine care is covered, from annual health checks, vaccinations, dental work (including extractions) to passport completion, microchipping and castration.
To make this as easy as possible we not only provide ‘Zone Visits’ for routine work but also offer a bespoke Equine Health Plan to help keep routine care simple and cost effective.

Diagnostic imaging
All of our diagnostic imaging equipment is of the highest standard, battery powered and completely portable. We believe your horses deserve the best care possible so we ensure our equipment can do that.
Our digital x-ray generates an image that can be viewed on the yard within seconds and can be used to image most areas of the horse.
We have two high quality ultrasound scanners allowing us to scan not only the musculoskeletal system but also the abdomen, lungs, heart, reproductive tract and even eyes.
Our two flexible endoscopes allow us to perform gastroscopy for the diagnosis of equine gastric ulcer syndrome, upper and lower airway scopes as well as more complex investigations such as cystoscopy (imaging the bladder) and hysteroscopy (imaging the uterus). Images are sent straight to a screen so you can watch the process in real time with the vet.
We also have a rigid dental scope which allows is to investigate any oral problems in more detail.
